AZERBAIJAN: GWP on the market decline in January, while paid claims rise by more than 30%

In January 2026, total GWP of 16 insurance companies operating in Azerbaijan amounted to AZN 156.6 million (~EUR 77.14 million), which is 4.3% less y-o-y, ABC.AZ reports, citing the Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA).

Meanwhile, paid claims in January amounted to AZN 62.01 million (~EUR 30.55 million), which represents a 30.2% increase compared to the same period last year.

In January 2026, health insurance in Azerbaijan totaled AZN 51.7 million, while paid claims in the segment reached AZN 6.9 million. According to the CBA, compared to January 2025, these figures represent a decrease in premiums of approximately 11.4% and an increase in payments of 37.9%.

The overall market loss ratio in January 2026 was 13.3%, vs 12% in January 2025. For comparison, the loss ratio was 11% in January 2020, 15.2% in 2021, 5.7% in 2022, and 9.8% in 2023.

According to ABC.AZ, citing the CBA, Pasha Sığorta and Pasha Hayat Sığorta led the market in terms of GWP in the reporting period. Pasha Sığorta ranked first with AZN 65.5 million, followed by Pasha Hayat Sığorta that collected AZN 50.35 million. Aqrar Sığorta rounds out the top three, having collected AZN 8.95 million.
