CROATIA: Croatia is still among the countries with the highest number of deaths on roads

24 October 2024 — Marina MAGNAVAL
Last year, there were 71 deaths per million inhabitants in Croatia, while the average in the EU was 46, osiguranje.hr reports.

It is noted that the state of the roads and irresponsible drivers in Croatia are becoming an increasing problem, despite police actions and warnings, as is evidenced by a recent report of the European Commission, which stated that Croatia is still among the countries with the highest number of deaths per million inhabitants. At the same time last year, 20,400 people died on European roads, 1% less than in 2023.

According to EC data, the most dangerous roads are in Bulgaria and Romania, where there were 82 and 81 deaths per million inhabitants, respectively, and Latvia is worse than Croatia with 75 deaths per million inhabitants, while Sweden had the fewest number (22).

“The number of registered vehicles has grown significantly; in the last ten years we have recorded an increase of almost 32%. Also, the number of drivers has increased – 1% more than last year, that is, we now have around 2,330,000 drivers in Croatia. The number of motorcycles has increased by as much as 66%, which all creates an additional load on our roads - highways, state, county and local roads. The number of people killed is decreasing year by year, but unfortunately 172 people have died so far this year, which is 13 people less than at the same time last year”, said Minister of the Interior Davor Božinović.
