Since the beginning of this year, the number of automobile thefts has significantly increased in Latvia, reports The Baltic Course quoting the information provided by IF Apdrosinasana insurance company. The majority of thefts were registered in Riga and regions near Riga, the three to five years old cars being the most stolen.

From January to May 2015, the number of automobile thefts, as compared with the same period in 2014, increased by almost 70%, also informs LETA.

Vehicle thefts went up in April, when If Apdrosinasana was receiving insurance claims every week. If Apdr "This year we have seen the trend of stealing different brands of cars - both traditionally popular BMW X5 and Toyota Land Cruiser models and the Volkswagen Sharan, Honda Civic and Honda Accord models," stated IF's Motor Insurance claims team leader Pavel VALAINIS.

So far, only two of the stolen automobiles reported by the IF's customers have been found. In both cases, it was thanks to anti-theft devices installed in the vehicles. "We noticed that cars equipped with the Keyless Go system (the driver makes it easy to enter the cabin and start the engine with an integrated panel" Start & Stop "button without having to remove the ignition key and / or alarm panels from pockets or bags) are stolen more often. Therefore, we recommend the installation of one of the additional anti-theft systems, which not only hinder the auto start (eg Skybrake Black Bug, Basta, etc.), but also help to find the car after the theft (eg Sherlog, TrackGuard, GPS transmitters, etc.), "advises Paul VALAINIS.

The stolen cars are usually no older than nine years. Automobiles three to five years old are the most popular with thieves.
