According to Ülli Reimets, head of loss prevention at EKsL, pipe leaks have become more common in recent years and most often occur in apartments. “The number of leaks increased by a fifth over the year and their total loss - by almost a third. The damage from dozens of pipe leaks exceeded EUR 50 thousand, while the average loss was EUR 2,500”, said Reimets.
According to Ülli Reimets, it is worrying that a fifth of buildings experienced pipe leaks more than once during the year. “Repeated leaks in the same pipeline indicate serious deficiencies that need to be checked and fixed. Last year, there were most repeated leaks in apartment buildings built in the 70s and 80s”, the head of loss prevention at EKsL noted.
In 2024, there were 22,200 building property insurance cases with a total loss of EUR 52 million. The largest part of that amount, or 44%, was caused by pipe leaks, 22% - by fires, while storms and other natural disasters caused a tenth of the building property insurance damage.
According to the Association, in 2024, 6,500 of the property insurance pipe leak losses occurred in apartments, where the average pipe leak loss was EUR 2,100. There were 2,000 pipe leak cases in private houses with an average loss of EUR 3,300, whereas the average pipe leak loss in commercial and industrial buildings was EUR 4,200 and EUR 2,500 in apartment associations. The above statistics do not include liability insurance compensation, EKsL added.
