ESTONIA: LKF: motor insurance claims last year caused a total loss of EUR 80 million

4 February 2025 — Marina MAGNAVAL
According to the Estonian Motor Insurance Fund (LKF), there were 33,700 motor insurance claims in Estonia last year, with a total loss of EUR 80 million. In addition, Estonian vehicles caused 2,400 traffic accidents abroad, with a total loss of EUR 10 million, LKF said.

Mart Jesse, CEO of LKF, emphasized that the number of traffic accidents last year in Estonia was 2% less than the year before, but mostly due to the lack of snow in February and December. “At the same time, total damage from traffic accidents increased by 9% over the year. This was due to an increase in the number of more serious traffic accidents and an increase in the cost of repairs and other services”, said Jesse.

The CEO of LKF believes that the situation with accidents when people are injured is worrying. “According to the statistics of the Estonian Transport Board, 69 people died in traffic, which is 10 more than in 2023. 2,153 people were injured in traffic, which is over 200 more than a year earlier”, he explained. "The traffic situation is deteriorating very quickly, and it is obvious that without rapid and strong state intervention, there will be no improvement”, Jesse added.

In 2024, there were 25 serious traffic accidents in Estonia, the amount of damage for which exceeded EUR 100,000. The year before there were 20 such accidents and 17 the year before that.

The average loss for motor third party liability insurance cases was EUR 2,500 last year. The average loss for cases involving trucks was EUR 4,200, buses – EUR 2,800, cars and light trucks – EUR 2,300. The average personal injury in accidents last year was EUR 8,316 and vehicle damage was EUR 2,219.

LKF noted that most (40%) of all motor liability insurance cases occurred in parking lots last year, which is a total of 13,600 cases with total loss of EUR 19 million.
