The Hellenic Association of Insurance Companies (EAEE) held an event "Securing THE FUTURE | Sustainability & Resilience" in the context of its Annual General Meeting. The event covered a wide range of issues such as health and pension savings, focusing on climate change and natural disasters.

Alexandros Sarrigeorgiou, President of the EAEE, spoke about the great challenges of the time, climate change, demographics, emphasizing that Greece remains dangerously underinsured, leaving citizens with a disproportionate financial burden. “The insurance market can support citizens and the economy in the event of natural disasters, in health and supplementary pensions”, he said. “It is time, however, for the government to decide whether to give private insurance the role it deserves in Greece”, President of the EAEE added.

Kostis Hatzidakis, Deputy Prime Minister, noted that increasing pension savings, addressing the impacts of climate change and containing the cost of healthcare services are three areas in which insurance companies can play an important role.

The Governor of the Bank of Greece, Yiannis Stournaras mentioned that the Greek insurance market is very well capitalized and has the potential to take on a broader role in managing natural disasters, both in covering losses and through its role as a long-term investor. “Homes and businesses need to be insured so that they cope with difficulties. Comparing the percentage of insured homes in Greece, which is 18%, with the corresponding figure in Spain, which is 76%, clearly shows that there is still a long way to go”, the Governor noted.
