14 February 2024 — Marina MAGNAVAL
Compared to seven years ago, the situation with car theft in Latvia has significantly improved, and the number of stolen insured cars has decreased seven times, the Latvian Insurers Association (LAA) reports.

in 2017, 372 cars were stolen in Latvia, and in 2023 - only 51, according to LAA data*. Since 2018, there has been a gradual decrease in the number of thefts.

During 2023, in Latvia 51 cars were stolen, which had a Motor Hull policy. While in 2022 there were 71 cases of stolen insured cars.

The Association noted that BMW cars still top the list of the most stolen cars in 2023: last year there were 13 cases, while in 2017 - 115 BMW cars were stolen. The leader of the most stolen car brands is followed by Toyota with 10 stolen cars and Hyundai with 7.

"The decrease in the number of car thefts is very good news, and the entry of "simpler" cars into the top of the most stolen brands is also significant. The number of thefts dropped sharply during the pandemic with lifestyle changes and, of course, the role of police. With the start of the war in Ukraine, the export channels of expensive and exclusive stolen cars to Russia were closed or significantly hindered", commented Janis Abasins, president of LAA.

*Insurers' data on the most stolen cars differs from the official police statistics, as the LAA only collects data on vehicles that have a Motor Hull insurance policy.
