LATVIA: LAA: travel insurance paid claims are expected to exceed EUR 1.7 million this summer

2 July 2024 — Marina MAGNAVAL
During the last summer travel season, Latvian insurers paid out EUR 1.66 million to their clients for various types of accidents. 68% of this amount represents reimbursements for travelers' medical expenses and repatriation, according to data collected by the Association of Latvian Insurers (LAA).

The association expects that paid claims during this summer season will exceed EUR 1.7 million as travel volumes continue to rise.

The collected data includes information on travel insurance benefits paid out by Latvian insurers from June 1 to September 30, 2023 (the hottest period of the summer travel season). In total, during 2023, EUR 5.4 million was paid out in travel insurance benefits, which is 4.6% more y-o-y.

Medical and repatriation expenses make up the largest portion of travel insurance benefits. The next largest portion (almost 18%) reflects the costs of travel changes, such as travel cancellations, delays and flight changes, etc., the association added.
