Hammond received an honorary degree from the University of East Anglia (UEA) 37 years after graduating from the university. In his acceptance address to the School of Economics graduating class of 2017, he highlighted the opportunity that education affords everyone. He spoke about being the first in his family to stay in school past 16. He was the first to gain a degree after growing up in southeast London public housing where his father issued bus tickets. He graduated with an economics degree from UEA in 1980 and returned to accept his Doctorate of Civil Law 'honoris causa'.
Before leading Lockton's international operations, he set up Sedgwick Global Ltd in the US in 1992 and was the CEO of both Marsh UK Ltd and JLT Risk Solutions.
Mike is active in several charitable causes and institutions. After the 9/11 attack in which 295 of his Marsh colleagues died, he helped establish a charity which awards university scholarships in the UK and USA for students seeking careers in the insurance industry. He is a past trustee and chairman of Ace Africa, a charity that provides education and support to children impacted by HIV/AIDS in Kenya and Tanzania, and has personally supported the local education of two Kenyan children through school and university. He has been an ambassador for Whizzkidz and has actively sought employment opportunities for young wheelchair users in the London insurance community. In addition, he has established two scholarships enabling students to study for a degree at UEA's School of Economics.
