POLAND: Catastrophic losses in 2024 cost the insurance sector three times more than a year before

According to the Polish Financial Supervision Authority’s (KNF) estimation, last year's catastrophic losses reached PLN 3.84 billion (~EUR 0.9 billion), 272% more than the previous year. Natural disasters generated the largest share of this amount, according to money.pl.

According to a KNF report obtained by money.pl, last year's natural disasters caused insured losses estimated at PLN 2.82 billion, ten times more than the previous year. Meanwhile, damage from man-made disasters increased by 37% y-o-y to PLN 1.01 billion. The lion's share of losses in the first case was caused by the September flood in southwestern Poland, which was also the most expensive event in 2024. Over 131,000 claims (98%) were reported due to the flood, which have already been settled for a total of PLN 2.129 billion (according to data as of June 30, 2025).

According to the KNF's report, the most frequent catastrophic events last year were fires (16 events), while the costliest events were related to heavy rains, flooding, and hurricanes. Their total cost amounted to PLN 2.49 billion, or nearly two-thirds of the total catastrophic losses in 2024. Fires, in turn, ranked second in this category, losses from which reached PLN 399 million (PLN 184 million more than in 2023).
