13 insurers are interested in participating in the nuclear risk insurance pool in Poland. The company, that will lead the pool, aims to have it established by the end of next year, as Andrzej Jarczyk, CEO of TUW PZUW, revealed during Energy Days in Katowice, Gazeta Ubezpieczeniowa (Insurance Gazette) writes.

"Such a liability insurance policy for the operator, i.e., Polish Nuclear Power Plants, will have to be issued before nuclear fuel enters a plant. Nevertheless, speaking on behalf of the entire insurance market, we have decided to create a mechanism to prepare us for insuring nuclear power plants and this fuel much earlier", said Andrzej Jarczyk. He pointed out that nuclear risk insurance is new to the Polish market.

As recently reported by "Puls Biznesu," TUW PZUW will be the leader of the Polish nuclear pool. "Today, we are at a very advanced stage of creating a Polish nuclear pool. Our ambition is to have such a pool in place by the end of next year. We already have declarations from at least 13 insurers with companies in Poland", Andrzej Jarczyk explained.

"We expected that, given the guaranteed amount, the minimum amount under the Vienna Convention, of approximately PLN 1.6-1.7 billion, we would be able to collect around 10%, maybe 20%, on the Polish market. Today, these declarations are even twice as high", said the CEO of TUW PZUW. “Of course, this will not be enough to issue such policies, we will also need capacity from other markets, and this will be provided by European and global nuclear pools”, Andrzej Jarczyk noted.
