POLAND: Warta: Polish farmers rarely opt for comprehensive property protection

11 December 2025 — Marina MAGNAVAL
One in ten farmers surveyed in the SW Research study, commissioned by Warta, admitted to having no insurance. Only one in five uses additional, unsubsidized policies. Respondents said that despite the growing number of financial challenges, including those related to weather, they still rarely opt for comprehensive property protection, Gazeta Ubezpieczeniowa (Insurance Gazette) writes.

According to the study, respondents' responses show that 57% use only mandatory insurance, with only 19% opting for additional, unsubsidized policies that cover assets such as farm buildings, machinery, supplies, and animals. And when farmers decide to purchase additional coverage, they most often choose farm building insurance (47%), third-party liability insurance (42%), or life insurance (31%), while extreme weather conditions remain farms' biggest enemy.

Warta emphasized that farmers are increasingly recognizing the value of assistance services. According to the insurer's data, the number of requests for such assistance was higher this year than in 2024.

The survey also revealed that one in five respondents don't remember the last time they updated their insurance coverage. Meanwhile, 27% of respondents last updated their insurance coverage three to four years ago.

"We're currently observing a disturbing trend in the industry. Farm buildings are sometimes insured at values from several years ago. As a result, in the event of a serious loss, farmers often receive compensation that is insufficient to cover their actual losses. This is a classic example of underinsurance, which is one of the most serious problems in agricultural insurance", said Beata Czajczyk, Warta expert.
