RUSSIA: the number of MTPL appeals to the Financial Ombudsman in 1H decreased by more than 15% y-o-y

13 August 2021 — Marina MAGNAVAL
In the first half of 2021, the number of appeals to the Financial Ombudsman for Disputes of Clients of MTPL insurers decreased by 15.5% y-o-y and amounted to 65,579, as reported by the Chief Financial ombudsman Yuri VORONIN, as ASN reports.

It is noted that the number of MTPL appeals in the first and second quarters of 2021 is one of the lowest compared to quarterly data for the entire period of operation of the institution of a financial ombudsman.

"The down trend of MTPL disputes is stable this year. At the same time, we can't say that this is due to only one of the factors. The coronavirus pandemic continues to have a significant impact on the number of appeals - consumer activity has decreased. Also, in recent years, there have been many changes in the MTPL regulation, which now have a positive effect on the market as a whole and affect the number of disputes" VORONIN explained. He also stressed that the reduction in the number of MTPL disputable situations is also associated with establishment of the institution of pre-trial dispute settlement.

However, MTPL, as the most popular insurance type, continues to lead in terms of the number of appeals to the financial ombudsman. At the end of the first half of 2021, the share of MTPL in the total number of appeals amounted to 69.6%.
