Of this total, RON 82.4 million (EUR 16.25 million) covered losses to residential properties caused by risks such as fires, explosions, and floods—up 21% y-o-y. Notably, RON 79 million was paid under voluntary home insurance policies, underscoring their essential role in ensuring protection at the real value of insured homes and belongings.
Romania is grappling with increasingly frequent extreme weather events, as well as numerous domestic risks that can severely damage or completely destroy a home. Last year alone, insurers paid an average of 100 home-insurance claims per day.
“The rise in claims confirms that the risks we face are becoming more frequent and more severe. This comes in a worrying context: only 17% of Romanian homes are fully protected through both mandatory and voluntary insurance. In other words, more than 8 out of 10 homes remain insufficiently protected against risks ranging from fires and floods to extreme weather,” said Alexandru Ciuncan, President & CEO of UNSAR.
“The higher compensation volumes highlight both the real impact of risks on Romanian properties and the major difference that properly chosen insurance can make. A voluntary home insurance policy is an investment in being #safeATHOME with your loved ones,” added Alina Bărbulescu, Coordinator of General Insurance Sections at UNSAR.
In Romania, voluntary home insurance can be purchased only for dwellings already covered by the mandatory PAD policy. Voluntary policies provide extended protection at the full value of the home and/or its contents, covering losses from natural disasters as well as risks such as fires, explosions, storms, falling objects, water-system failures, heating or air-conditioning malfunctions, damage to electronics and appliances, and more.
Homeowners can also access tailored protection solutions for specific types of household goods, as well as liability coverage for accidental damage caused to neighbors—offering broader security and peace of mind.
