TRIGLAV continues to support the road safety improvement in SLOVENIA

4 February 2016 — Daniela GHETU
Zavarovalnica TRIGLAV and the A.s.K. ( Aktivna signalizacija Korun) company have announced the extension of the "Working together to improve road safety in Slovenia" campaign for 2016. Up to 12 dangerous sections throughout Slovenia will be equipped with the COPS@road smart warning system, and the selected municipalities will receive co-financing of up to EUR 5,000 from Zavarovalnica TRIGLAV.

The two partners have already installed last year 12 COPS@road systems in selected municipalities, thereby actively contributing to reducing the risk of road accidents.

"We are aware that last year the highest number of accidents in Slovenia occurred in residential areas. This is confirmed by the cases of car damage which we processed. The most frequent reasons for the accidents were improper vehicle manoeuvres and failure to adjust speed. Campaigns to date have shown that it is possible to reduce the risk of such accidents through appropriate measures using innovative solutions. Therefore we have decided to continue our cooperation with the municipalities and A.s.K.," said Matej FERLAN, executive director of non-life insurance claims at Zavarovalnica Triglav.

The COPS@road smart warning system is a technologically advanced traffic signaling system that warns drivers in real time to drive with increased care at critical points where frequent accidents occur. The system is composed of a series of variable signs which display traffic signals and information, equipped with software-controlled sensors which monitor traffic in various directions on blind and dangerous road sections and give drivers two-stage warnings of accident danger in real time. The systems increase safety and improve traffic flow, and also increase the safety of entering traffic. Statistics indicate that installed systems have increased safety by up to 90%. Municipalities with road junctions, dangerous underpasses, overpasses, pedestrian crossings and railway crossings at which significant numbers of accidents have occurred in the past can apply for co-financing of COPS@road systems.

One year on from the installation of the initial systems, the responses are positive. Local police stations have recorded a significant reduction in traffic accidents at the locations at which the systems have been installed. "We confirm that in the year following the installation of the system no accidents have been recorded, nor have there been any accidents in the zone of influence, i.e. the direct vicinity of the system. We hope it stays this way in the future," says Marko SKEDELJ, Deputy Chief of Police at the Novo Mesto police station a little over a year after the installation of the system at the junction of Westrova and Segova streets in Novo Mesto. The year also passed mainly without traffic accidents at the other locations, at which more than 150 accidents, including some fatal crashes, have been recorded in past years.
