Zurich: leadership transition in EMEA business

Currently group CEO of AXA UK and Ireland, Amanda BLANC will also join the executive committee at ZURICH, with the handover scheduled to complete in the fourth quarter of 2018. BLANC is to succeed Gary SHAUGHNESSY as CEO of ZURICH Insurance's EMEA business.

BLANC has led AXA's UK and Ireland business since July 2016, having moved from leading the general insurance division of AXA for the same regions in January 2016. She was appointed CEO of AXA's Commercial Lines business at the same time as joining the executive board in 2011. BLANC rejoined AXA following a three year stint at Towergate, where she held various leadership roles from 1999 to 2003.

ZURICH said SHAUGHNESSY is stepping down from his leadership role and as a member of ZURICH's Executive Committee following his diagnosis with Parkinson's disease. However he will retain several board positions across the carrier's different divisions, as well as becoming a strategic advisor to the business. SHAUGHNESSY has been with ZURICH since 2012, when he joined as CEO of ZURICH UK Life. He was appointed to his current position in July 2016.

Group CEO Mario GRECO thanked SHAUGHNESSY for his contribution to the company and welcomed Amanda BLANC. "I'm especially grateful for the pivotal role that he has played in creating an integrated and successful EMEA organization", said GRECO about SHAUGHNESSY. "In Amanda we have a high-impact proven people leader with deep experience and knowledge. Throughout her career in commercial insurance, broking and consulting, she has consistently demonstrated a keen focus on customer needs, people engagement and profitability," he said.

BLANC's departure from AXA follows the carrier's USD 15.3 billion acquisition of Bermudian (re)insurer XL Catlin last month.
