LATVIA: LAA: Over past three years accident insurance in Latvia rose 25%

The accident insurance market has been growing dynamically in all Baltic countries over the past three years. Compared to 2023, premiums or customer contributions has increased by 39% in Lithuania, 25% in Latvia, and 19% in Estonia, according to data compiled by the Latvian Insurers Association (LAA).

Last year, premiums written in accident insurance in the Baltic States totaled EUR 97.1 million. Of this, 57.4 million were generated in Lithuania, EUR 22.5 million - in Latvia, and EUR 17.2 million - in Estonia.

Eurostat data shows that accidents are one of the leading causes of death and disability among young people in the European Union.

The amount of compensation paid has also increased over the past three years. In 2025, a total of EUR 31.5 million were paid out in accident insurance claims in the Baltics. In Lithuania, claims reached EUR 17.3 million, in Latvia – EUR 8.6 million, and in Estonia – EUR 5.7 million. Compared to 2023, the amount of compensation in Latvia has grown by 25%, in Estonia by 24%, and in Lithuania by 19%.

On a per capita basis, the highest accident insurance premiums in 2025 were in Lithuania – EUR 19.9 per capita. In Estonia - EUR 12.6, and in Latvia – EUR 12.1 per capita.

The first quarter of this year also shows that the demand for accident insurance remains high. In the Baltics, in the first three months of the year, accident insurance premiums were written in the amount of EUR 26.7 million, while claims were paid out in the amount of EUR 8.4 million. In Latvia, premiums were written in the amount of EUR 6.6 million and claims were paid out in the amount of EUR 2.2 million during the reporting period.
