POLAND: Poland in the top five most dangerous roads in Europe

16 August 2021 —
The PIU (Polish Chamber of Insurance) survey shows that 91% of drivers are confident in their driving skills. However, this exact behavior brought Poland to one of the last places in the ranking of the safest roads in Europe, Gazeta Ubezpieczeniowa reports.

Too much self-confidence has been the biggest problem among drivers for years. Experts of the rankomat.pl analyzed data from the PIU survey and the report "Road accidents in Poland in 2020" of the Police Headquarters.

In 2020, the number of recorded road accidents decreased by 22.3% compared to the previous year, but this was due to the Covid-19 pandemic that significantly reduced traffic on European roads. However, despite the restrictions, the May holiday period in 2020 had the same average number of deaths as the corresponding period of 2019. Polish drivers keep making the same mistakes: 49% of drivers believe it is safe to exceed the speed limit in residential areas by 15 km / h, and 66% of them say that exceeding the speed limit by 10 km / h is still safe. The Police report clearly shows that one of the basic reasons of road accidents is the mismatch between speed and traffic conditions. Still more than half (55%) of drivers think they can drive quickly and safely at the same time.

96% of drivers consider their driving skills to be good or very good, while apart from the problem of speed, weekends and alcohol are still a weak point. In 2020, 1,656 accidents were caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol. Compared to 2019, such events increased by 24 fatalities. Most fatal accidents occurred on Fridays - 382 accidents (16.7% of the total) and 422 killed (16.9% of the total), and on Saturdays - 375 accidents (16.4% of the total) and 416 killed (16.7% of the total).

Poland is in the top five most dangerous roads in Europe. According to the report of the European Commission, the rate of fatalities in road accidents in Poland is 65 per million inhabitants. Despite a decrease of 15% compared to 2019, more people are killed only in Romania, Latvia, and Bulgaria, the report says.
