Estonia: The number of traffic accidents, back to the pre-COVID crisis

30 June 2021 —
According data provided by LKF (Estonian Traffic Insurance Fund), the number of traffic accidents related to MTPL policies issued by Estonian insurers was 2,570 in May 2021, about 30% more as compared with May 2020.

Thus, according to Ulli Reimets, head of EKsL's Damage Prevention Department, with the relaxation of COVID-19 prevention measures this year, the number of traffic accidents has returned to the pre-corona crisis level: "While the claims frequency decreased during the restrictions, speeds increased due to empty roads. (...) The pre-crisis life is coming back, that is why now are more drivers on the roads. Unfortunately, the driving speeds are still higher, which is why the number of accidents will probably continue to grow".

LKF representatives mentioned during the first five months of 2021, there were reported 13,970 traffic accidents related to Motor TPL policies, with a total loss of EUR 25 million. Of this total, about 1,000 traffic accidents occurred with Estonian vehicles abroad.
