Gabriel Bernardino to leave EIOPA in March, after two successive mandates

After two successful mandates as Chairman of the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA), totalizing 10 years, Gabriel Bernardino will leave this position in March. Peter Braumuller, the current Vice-Chairperson of EIOPA will act as interim Chairman until a final appointment will be made.

In a press conference held on the occasion of the 10th edition of the EIOPA Annual Conference, the European body's representatives have explained that the process of appointing a new Chairman is in course, but EIOPA's Board of Supervisors doesn't have the final word in it. Most probably, by the end of March, the short list of nominations will available for the final debates and decision within the European Commission and the European Parliament. According to EIOPA's Regulations, the body's Chairman may not hold office for more than two terms.

Asked about the future developments of his career, Gabriel Bernardino has said that after 10 years of intense work, he will grant himself and his family a well-deserved period of relaxation and after that will consider his options for the future.

Chairman of EIOPA, Gabriel Bernardino is responsible for the strategic direction of EIOPA and represents the Authority at the Council of the European Union, the European Commission and the European Parliament. Mr. Bernardino prepares the work of EIOPA's Board of Supervisors and also chairs the meetings of the Board of Supervisors and the Management Board.

Mr. Bernardino is the first Chairperson of EIOPA. He was elected by the Board of Supervisors of EIOPA on 10 January, 2011. His nomination followed a pre-selection of the European Commission and was confirmed by the European Parliament after a public hearing held on 1 February, 2011. Mr. Bernardino assumed his responsibilities on 1 March, 2011 for a first five-year term. On 16 December 2015 the European Parliament confirmed the re-appointment of Mr Bernardino for a second five-year term, which started on 1 March 2016.

Prior to his current role, Mr. Bernardino was the Director General of the Directorate for Development and Institutional Relations at the Instituto de Seguros de Portugal (ISP). He has served in several positions of increasing responsibility since he joined the ISP in 1989 and represented EIOPA's preceding organization, CEIOPS, as Chairman between October 2009 and December 2010.

Peter Braumuller is Managing Director of Insurance and Pension Supervision at Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) and is also Vice-Chairperson of EIOPA. On 26 November 2020, the Board of Supervisors renewed his term of office as Vice-Chairperson. According to EIOPA Regulation, the Vice-Chairperson carries out the functions of the Chairperson in the absence of the Chairperson.
