CEE motor insurance 2015: GWP up by 5%, but still unsatisfactory profitability

The overall non-life insurance premiums production went up, in the CEE, by about 5%, to EUR 18.76 billion, in 2015. Motor insurance lines saw the same dynamic, recording a GWP increase of 5%, to EUR 9.42 billion and practically generated a little more than half of the total absolute growth in the non-life area. Yet, the sector is far from seeing the high pre-crisis growth rates.

Pro and cons for the bodily injuries' compensation tables debated in Budapest, at the 1st International Motor Insurance Conference

"The amount of compensation for bodily injury can be the result of lengthy discussions based on the extent of the injuries, as documented by medical professionals and the claimant's subjective assessment of the damage. If the disparity between the views of the claimant and the liable party on the damage is large, a judge will decide on the amount of the compensation. This process costs both time and money," says Patrick Le ROY, Gen Re, Germany. In fact, this will be tje starting point of the presentation he will give in Budapest, at the 1st International Motor Insurance Conference, on April 28th-29th.

STATISTICS: MOLDAVIAN insurers reported a business volume of EUR 59 million at the end of 2015

At the end of December 2015, the Moldavian insurance market totaled MDL 1.2 billion (about EUR 58.8 million), up by 2.1% y-o-y, according to the preliminary statistics recently published by the market's supervisory authority. Claims paid by the 15 insurers that have reported operations totaled MDL 386.6 million (or EUR 18.5 million) - equivalent to 31% of the total GWP.
