POLAND: PBUK: Since 2004 there has been a four-fold increase in the number of reported damages involving Polish vehicles on European roads

For four years, the number of damages caused on European roads by drivers of vehicles with Polish license plates has been systematically growing. In 2024, such drivers were responsible for 70.8 thousand accidents, which is 2.7% more y-o-y.

An even more serious problem is the exponential increase in the number of damages caused by drivers without valid third-party liability insurance, Gazeta Ubezpieczeniowa (Insurance Gazette) writes.

According to data from the Polish Motor Insurers' Bureau (PBUK), last year drivers of vehicles with Polish plates caused almost 200 accidents per day on foreign roads. As Mariusz Wichtowski, President of the Management Board of PBUK, noted that since 2004, when 17.6 thousand accidents were recorded, there has been a four-fold increase in the number of reported damages involving Polish insurance policies.

“The number of accidents caused by drivers of vehicles with Polish plates on foreign roads has been growing for four years. It has not yet approached its record of 2018, but the dangerous trend is becoming alarmingly persistent”, said the president of PBUK. “Regardless of the causes of the phenomenon, its scale translates into an increasing financial burden on the Polish insurance market, and consequently, on the customers. In 2024, it reached almost PLN 1.8 billion”, the president of PBUK emphasized.

It is noted that in 2024, as in previous years, the largest number of damages caused by drivers of vehicles with Polish plates took place in Germany, where it didn’t change compared to 2023. On the other hand, it increased in Italy (+10%) and decreased in Belgium (-5%).

PBUK data shows that there has also been a colossal increase in the number of accidents caused on foreign roads by drivers of vehicles with Polish plates without valid third-party liability insurance. In 2024, 1,574 of such cases were registered, which means an increase of 56% y-o-y. In 2024, PBUK paid nearly PLN 25.7 million for such drivers (+4.5% y-o-y).
