Eurostat data on the number of road accidents in Europe shows that Poland is in the top of the countries with the highest number of accidents. However, Rankomat experts point out, that based on the number of inhabitants Poland ranks 3rd with the lowest number of accidents per 100 thousand people, Gazeta Ubezpieczeniowa (Insurance Gazette) writes.

The highest number of accidents occurs in countries with the largest area and population. Poland came 10th with a result of 21 thousand and was one of the few countries to see a decrease compared to 2022. However, according to the police data, there were over 500 more accidents last year.

Rankomat experts point out that calculating the number of accidents per 100,000 inhabitants changes the picture dramatically: Poland is in 3rd place from the bottom with a score of 57. Only Finland (52.9) and Denmark (41.1) achieved a better ratio. Poland is followed by Norway (61.2) and France (75.6), which have a larger population, road network and traffic intensity.

It is noted that the most significant number is fatalities, and in this regard, Poland is in the European lead. According to data from the European Commission for 2024, there were 52 road accident fatalities per million inhabitants in Poland (8th place). The highest mortality rate per million inhabitants was recorded in Romania (77), while Norway had the lowest (16).

According to data from the European Commission, since 2019, the number of fatalities per million inhabitants has decreased in most EU countries. Poland and Lithuania are the leaders in this respect (35%).
