According to the latest data compiled by the National Road Safety Council operating at the Ministry of Infrastructure, costs of all traffic accidents in Poland in 2021 amounted to PLN 39.3 billion (~EUR 8.56 billion*). The social costs of accidents in the country decreased by 31%, to PLN 17.3 billion compared to 2018, when it reached PLN 56.6 billion, Gazeta Ubezpieczeniowa reports.

"Despite a significant decline, Polish society still cannot afford high costs of road accidents. Therefore, the actions taken by the Ministry of Infrastructure and the National Council of Statutory Auditors focus primarily on reducing the number of their victims. We see this opportunity in the implementation of the new National Road Safety Program for the years 2021-2030. It involves many entities at the central and local government level, as well as, inter alia, the police or the fire brigade. At the operational level, the National Road Safety Council carries out activities in the field of programming and monitoring, research and analysis, education and promotion, training of road safety personnel and development of cooperation with regions, non-governmental organizations, and foreign institutions" says Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Rafal WEBER.

The costs of road traffic accidents decreased by 20% compared to 2018 - to PLN 35.8 billion. In general, the costs of road traffic accidents accounted for 1.5% of Polish GDP compared to 2.7% in 2018. Economic losses due to road traffic accidents amounted to PLN 27.9 billion and in 2021 were 15% lower than in 2018, when it was at the level of PLN 32.9 billion. The value of claims for personal injuries paid by insurance companies because of road accidents amounted to PLN 478 million, which means three times less than in 2018 (PLN 1.79 billion). At the same time, the value of material losses in road accidents amounted to PLN 3.3 billion, compared to PLN 12.1 billion (-73%).
