The number of storm-related claims also surged by 63%, reaching 7,537 settled cases. This trend points to both the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, and the growing awareness among homeowners of the need for extended financial protection through voluntary policies.
Storms typically cause significant damage to roofs, installations, facades, and windows, with the average claim payout amounting to 7,500 lei – a considerable burden for most families. The highest payout for a single storm damage claim reached 400,000 lei.
"Extreme weather, especially violent storms, has become more common in Romania, and this is clearly reflected in the volume and value of claims. Fortunately, there are solutions – voluntary home insurance is a crucial protection tool in today’s climate reality," said Alexandru Ciuncan, President and CEO of UNSAR.
On average, UNSAR member insurers paid out 21 storm damage claims per day in 2024, underscoring the increasing pressure of climate-related events on residential infrastructure.
Alina Bărbulescu, Property Insurance Specialist at UNSAR, emphasized that voluntary home insurance policies are essential for financial stability, covering a wide array of risks including storms, fires, accidental damage, and floods. These policies can be issued on top of the mandatory PAD policy and provide coverage at the real value of buildings and possessions, including risks like earthquakes, landslides, heating system failures, or damage to household electronics.
In total, voluntary home insurance payouts across all covered risks reached 163.7 million lei in 2024, up 13% from the previous year – a clear indication of the sector’s growing relevance amid climate challenges.
