Romania: Over 1,200 damage claims filed in just a few days after last week’s severe storms

Romanian insurers have already opened more than 1,200 damage claims in the wake of the violent storms that swept across several regions of Romania throughout the second week of July, data from UNSAR, the National Union of Insurance and Reinsurance Companies of Romania show.

The extreme weather events - torrential rain, hail, and lightning that left a trail of destruction in their wake - caused significant damage to insured properties, and their impact is still being felt by families and businesses across the country.

The majority of the claims - about 78% - were related to residential properties. Damaged roofs, cracked walls, shattered windows, and flooding are among the most frequently reported issues. Commercial and industrial properties account for roughly 10% of the claims, with warehouses, production facilities, and retail spaces suffering substantial damage that, in many cases, brought business operations to a halt.

Vehicles were also impacted. Around 9% of the claims were filed under CASCO voluntary motor insurance policies, covering damage from falling branches, uprooted trees, and hailstorms.

These incidents once again highlight the critical role insurance plays in a world where extreme weather is becoming increasingly frequent and intense due to climate change.

“Extreme weather events like those we saw last week serve as a stark reminder of our vulnerability to nature’s force. In such moments, insurance provides not only financial protection, but also a sense of stability and support, helping both individuals and businesses recover faster,” said Alexandru Ciuncan, President and CEO of UNSAR.

“More than 1,200 claims filed in just a few days is a clear signal: climate change is no longer a future concern—it’s a present-day reality. In the face of these growing risks, insurance is an essential tool for financial protection. The question now is how prepared we choose to be,” added Alina Bărbulescu, Property & Casualty Insurance Specialist at UNSAR.
