Albanian insurers recorded GWP worth EUR 61.80 million in Q1 2026, up by 9.5% y-o-y. Paid claims increased by 15.5% y-o-y (EUR 22.36) million. However, one should note that due to the Albanian currency appreciation vs. the precedent year, the growth rates in European currency are higher than those calculated with the premiums and paid claims values denominated in Albanian Lek.
Growth in life insurance decelerated as compared with the previous years (9.44% versus 17.8% in Q1 2025 and 11% in Q1 2024), this line of business continuing to hold a small share, of only 9.5%, in the market portfolio.
On the non-life side, GWP grew overall by 9.6%, to ~EUR 56 million. Property insurance classes saw a negative change of almost 28% in GWP for the “damages to property” line, while premiums for fire insurance, went up by 16.7%, to EUR 4.98 million. The overall turnover of the property insurance LoBs remains at modest value, reflecting a significant protection gap.
Motor insurance lines continue to account for over 67.8% of the total GWP, totaling EUR 41.9 million. The MTPL class (including DMTPL, Green Card and Border Insurance) accounts for the largest part of the total - EUR 37.33 million or 60.44% of the total market GWP. Motor insurance proved to be once again the market driver.
