STATISTICS: POLAND 1Q2025: claims paid for natural disasters and other damages to properties increased y-o-y by 47%

Gross premiums written by Polish insurers in Q1 2025 reached EUR 5.36 billion (PLN 22.43 billion), which is 5% more y-o-y, in European currency. Paid compensations and benefits reached EUR 3.21 billion (PLN 13.46 billion), 15.65% more y-o-y. According to the Polish Insurance Association (PIU), the number of insured Poles is steadily growing.

"Year over year, we are paying more in claims in both life and property insurance. After the first quarter of 2025, the sector paid over 12% more than during the same period a year earlier, including almost 16% more in property insurance. I hope that this year we will be able to maintain the relatively high market growth dynamics, especially in the property segment, similar to 2024. In GWP terms, the current results are slightly below expectations, but assuming the expected economic recovery, we can be optimistic about the future. Furthermore, it is worth emphasizing that after Q12025, insurers paid over 20% more in corporate income tax compared to the same period last year. Of course, unfavorable macroeconomic signals for the industry, such as expected interest rate cuts, are also on the horizon, but I am confident that the sector is and will be prepared for them," commented Piotr Wrzesiński, Vice President of the Management Board of the Polish Insurance Association.

Life insurance

According to PIU, 25.1 million life insurance contracts were concluded in Q1 2025, including 11.1 million individually and 14.0 million group insurance policies. Total GWP from life insurance reached EUR 1.4 billion (PLN 5.9 billion). This represents a 0.6% y-o-y increase. These payments reflect the current mortality situation in Poland.

Motor insurance

Motor insurance accounts for the largest portion both in GWP and paid claims terms. While GWP reached EUR 1.12 billion (PLN 4.7 billion) for mandatory MTPL insurance, claims and benefits totaled EUR 749 million (PLN 3.1 billion) in Q1 2025, figures that represent a 16%, respectively 6.3% y-o-y increase. At the same time, despite the increase in claims costs, the average MTPL insurance premium increased only 5.4%, reaching PLN 555. The average MTPL insurance claim increased by 9.9% compared to last year, reaching PLN 10,942 after Q1.

GWP from the MoD line amounted to EUR 895 million (PLN 3.75 billion) – 11% up y-o-y, while compensations reached EUR 531 million (PLN 2.2 billion), which is 7.9% more than in the same period of 2024.

GWP for the property insurance lines totaled EUR 806 million (PLN 3.37 billion), 3.7% more y-o-y. Paid claims for natural disasters and other property damage amounted to EUR 320 million (PLN 1.3 billion), which is almost 47% more than a year ago.

Profits in 2025

In the first quarter of 2025, insurers paid over PLN 556 million in income tax to the state budget. During this time, they generated nearly PLN 2.1 billion in net profit.
