This decrease in the number of accidents corresponds to the dynamics of concluded Green Card international insurance contracts, which decreased from 1.08 million units in 2019 to 0.6 million units in 2020 (-45%). The main reason is the significant restrictions on cross-border traffic of vehicles established to reduce spread of the pandemic.
The largest number of accidents under Ukrainian Green Card policies in 2020 occurred in the following countries:
o Poland - 1045
o Germany - 374
o Russia - 321
o Czech Republic - 144
o Hungary - 133
These five countries account for 74% of all accidents caused by Ukrainian drivers abroad. At the same time, total amount of paid claims increased by 7% to EUR 16.5 million (vs EUR 15.4 million in 2019). The Bureau noted that this is due to that the settlement procedure of accidents occurred abroad is quite long, thus, in 2020, payments were also made for accidents occurred in previous periods.
At the same time, in 2020, the largest number of accidents in Ukraine was caused by drivers with Green Card insurance certificates from countries such as:
o Poland - 497
o Lithuania - 308
o Czech Republic - 98
o Moldova - 90
o Belarus - 81
These five countries account for 70% of the total number of such accidents in Ukraine. The total number of accidents caused by foreign drivers last year was 1,541, and the amount of paid claims for these cases reached only EUR 1 million, which is 70% less than in 2019.
General Director of MTIBU, Vladimir SHEVCHENKO, noted that despite the difficult 2020, development and digitalization of the Green Card insurance segment continues. He stressed that introduction of an international insurance contract in electronic form is the first step towards complete digitalization and transformation of the document flow into electronic format.
