STATISTICS: SLOVAKIA 1H2026: steady market growth, but claims increase faster than premiums

GWP by the insurers domiciled in Slovakia amounted, according to the official statistics of the Slovak National Bank, to EUR 1.19 billion in H1 2026, which is by 5.24% more y-o-y.

Life insurance accounts for 34.43% of the total premiums amount, while motor insurance accounts for about 37.35% of the total premiums or about 57% of the non-life premiums.

According to NBS statistics, claims paid by Slovak insurers amounted to EUR 667.56 million, 13.24% more y-o-y. Claims for the motor insurance segment went up by only 4.8%, an increase driven mostly by the MTPL line.

By far, the most spectacular y-o-y change, although the absolute values are rather modest, is the one regarding paid claims for property insurance, which more than doubled y-o-y. Intense convective storms featuring torrential cloudbursts, severe hailstorms, and gale-force windstorms, the remaining trails pf the storm Boris in 2025, as well as the cumulative inflation across construction materials and labor costs. In addition, beyond retail residential property, Slovak commercial property lines experienced several large-scale industrial fires and operational business interruption (BI) claims.
