"An average of 99 traffic insurance cases per day means that one case occurs in Estonia approximately every 15 minutes", said Tuuli Pärenson.
However, despite the increase in the number of motor vehicle insurance cases, the statistics of the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) show a more positive trend in traffic accidents with human casualties. In the first six months of 2026, fewer people were injured in traffic accidents, but there were still somewhat more fatalities. In the first half of the year, 687 traffic accidents with human casualties occurred across Estonia, approximately 5% less than in the same period last year. 22 people died and 849 were injured.
According to Maria Pashkevich, Head of the Road Safety Department of the Estonian Transport Board, the aim of the Road Safety Programme 2026–2035 is to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries in traffic. At the same time, the increase in traffic accidents with minor injuries and property damage shows that when adverse circumstances coincide, even a seemingly ordinary mistake can lead to serious consequences.
