According to Business Press News, about 147,839 vehicles in the country have an insurance policy, while 1,700,149 cars are not insured.
It is noted that for many years there have been talks about the need to introduce compulsory motor vehicle liability insurance. Even though this issue has been discussed multiple times, it has not been resolved. “We have been talking about compulsory civil liability insurance (MTPL) for 20 years, but this year it is different, since we have no initiative on this issue, yet the government has already developed its own draft law, this document has been agreed upon and discussed with the industry, all processes have been carried out with government agencies, and it is ready to be submitted to parliament. When the government will take up this matter and when it will take any steps, I, unfortunately, cannot say”, commented Devi Khechinashvili, President of the Association of Insurance Companies.
“In addition to medical insurance, we have low insurance rates in all other product lines. Vehicles are in second place, while the property insurance rates are even lower... For many years, precisely because compulsory insurance has not been introduced for this market, the tools that would expand coverage, providing most of our population and businesses with insurance, have not been used. If we want to radically change the situation in motor insurance, only the law on compulsory insurance will help”, Devi Khechinashvili emphasized.
