ROMANIA: Storm damage payouts double as insurers respond to growing climate risks

Romanian insurers, members of UNSAR - the local professional association -, paid out nearly RON 50 million in storm-related home insurance claims in the first nine months of 2024 - double the total paid for all of 2023, according to the association's latest report.

The frequency of storms causing property damage is on the rise. In just the first three quarters of 2024, insurers settled 6,300 home insurance claims, marking a 36% increase compared to all of 2023. This translates to 23 families receiving financial support every day to repair their homes.

“We are witnessing the increasing impact of climate change, with extreme weather events becoming more frequent and severe. A voluntary home insurance policy is no longer just an option—it’s a necessity, providing critical financial protection,” said Alexandru Ciuncan, President & CEO of UNSAR.

The highest individual storm-related payout reached 400,000 lei, while the top three claims combined amounted to nearly 700,000 lei.

"Our homes deserve the best protection against risks, and voluntary home insurance is the solution. It provides the financial security needed to recover from unexpected disasters. Everyone should feel #SafeAtHome with their loved ones," added Alina Bărbulescu, Property & Casualty Insurance Specialist at UNSAR.

As extreme weather events continue to intensify, voluntary home insurance remains the most effective safeguard for Romanian homeowners.
