During the period from 2010 to 2023 there were a total of 235,787 accidents where at least one of the crashed vehicles was a truck, which is approximately 18% of all collisions during this period, according to the analysis of the accident portal, the Czech Insurance Agency wrote.
"The analysis of the Accident Portal shows that in terms of the share of accidents in all truck wrecks, highways are the least risky for freight transport. Motorway accidents account for only 8% of total truck accidents. On the contrary, this share is almost 20% on 1st class roads, 14% on 2nd class roads and almost 10% on 3rd class roads", says Jan Chalas from the company DataFriends, which is the operator of the Accident Portal.
Another interesting finding from the analysis is that the trucks that crashed are "aging". From 2010 to 2021, the average age of trucks involved in accidents was around 7 years, in 2023 it was 9 years. The slowdown of the European economy is thus probably reflected in the aging of the truck fleet, and also the reduction of companies' investments.
Also, in contrast to passenger cars, truck accidents are characterized by the dominant group of drivers who crash being middle-aged. Almost 19% of truck accident offenders are aged 39-45. In the case of passenger cars, the dominant group is young inexperienced drivers aged 18-24, who are responsible for almost 18% of accidents.
The main cause of accidents involving truck drivers is the way they drive (64% of all truck accidents). And the main cause of truck accidents is greatly influenced by the type of road where the accident occurs, the report says.
The accident portal was created with the support of the damage prevention fund and in cooperation with the Czech Insurance Agency.
