ESTONIA: Insurance losses from home fires almost tripled in five years

According to the Association of Estonian Insurance Companies (EKsL), the average insurance loss from home fires has almost tripled in five years. In home insurance in 2022, there were a total of 425 fires with a total loss of EUR 7 million.

234 fires in 2022 were in apartments, with an average loss amount of EUR 13 thousand, while 5 years ago, the average apartment fire loss was less than EUR 5 thousand. Some apartment fire losses in 2022 even exceeded EUR 100 thousand.

According to Ulli Reimets, head of EKsL's loss prevention department, in 2022 more than half of all home insurance fires (55%) were in apartments and 45% - in private houses. The average fire damage in private houses was EUR 19 thousand, and the largest was nearly EUR 0.5 million.
