According to the statistics of the Traffic Insurance Fund (LKF), 34,300 traffic insurance cases took place in Estonia last year with a total loss of EUR 72 million. In addition, Estonian vehicles caused 2,600 traffic accidents abroad, the total damage of which reached EUR 11 million, the Fund reports.

According to LKF board member Andres Piirsalu, the traffic situation shows no signs of improvement. "Compared to the previous year, the number of traffic insurance cases is at the same high level, and the total loss increased by 3%. The average traffic damage in Estonia is now EUR 2,100 euros", said Piirsalu.

Of all traffic insurance cases in 2023, the most (39%) happened in parking lots, which means 13,500 cases with a total loss of EUR 17 million. The number of parking accidents has been on the rise for the last 10 years.

The number of collisions during overtaking, changing lanes and leaving the lane increased by 3% - 3,500 cases with a total loss of EUR 10 million. "These traffic accidents happen primarily at high speeds, and their consequences are severe, because in addition to vehicle damage, people are also often injured", the LKF board member added.
