ESTONIA: The maximum compensation in motor insurance to rise to EUR 6.45 million

According to the recently approved amendments to the Road Insurance Law, the maximum compensation amount for a road accident will increase to EUR 6.45 million from July 15. And from December 1 this year, traffic insurance will be extended to unregistered vehicles such as electric scooters and off-road vehicles, the Estonian Traffic Fund (LKF) announced.

According to Mart Jesse, chairman of the LKF board, the amount of traffic insurance losses has been increasing year by year. "An accident with maximum compensation often means an accident with very serious health damage, when the victims suffer extremely serious injuries and remain permanently disabled. This entails decades of treatment for the victim and compensation for lost income, which is paid from the funds of motor insurance. Due to an increase in the cost of living, it was the right decision to increase the maximum compensation from EUR 5.6 million to EUR 6.45 million", said Jesse.

The insured amount related to personal injury will increase to EUR 6.45 million per insured event from EUR 5.6 million, while the insured amount for property damage, i.e. vehicles and other property, will increase to EUR 1.3 million per insured event from EUR 1.2 million.

From December 1, a compulsory road insurance contract must be concluded for all motor-driven land vehicles with a design speed exceeding 25 km/h or a design speed exceeding 14 km/h and weight of more than 25 kg, regardless of whether they are registered or not.
