Central Europe: Flooding caused insured losses of tens of millions of euro across the region

Intense rainfall episodes between August 16-20 in parts of Austria, Czechia, Poland and Slovakia resulted in instances of flash flooding and landslides leading to total aggregated insured losses, as initially reported by insurers from the region, in the tens of millions EUR, the latest Aon Weekly Cat Report said.

Economic losses are likely to go into the hundreds of millions in the coming days as damage assessments continue, Aon also said. Fortunately, no human fatalities were reported.

According to the event description provided by the Aon Weekly Cat Report, some locations reported impressive precipitation totals, with both Austrian and Polish capitals breaking rainfall records.

Across parts of Austria, heavy rains, flash flooding, and landslides were seen particularly on August 16- 17. In St. Anton am Arlberg, floodwaters and landslides destroyed roads and swept away numerous vehicles. As a result of the record-setting rains, nearly 600 flooding incidents were reported across Vienna. Many people were rescued from stalled vehicles and flooded buildings, while extensive traffic disruptions also occurred. Shortly after the event, local insurers reported hundreds of claims as a result of the event.

Numerous instances of flash flooding were also reported from parts of the Czech Republic, notably on August 18. Insurers faced hundreds of claims immediately after, with more claims expected to be filed in the coming days. Many of the reported impacts were observed in Central Bohemia and Moravia-Silesia regions.

Notable flooding also occurred in Poland as a result of high intensity of observed rainfall in urban areas. Numerous streets were flooded in Warsaw, which reported hundreds of interventions after the storms of August 20-21. Difficult situation was also reported from other parts of the country, including Zamość, which set the 24-hour rainfall record for the event.
