Child Safety: Central European insurers join forces for safer roads

17 September 2026 — Daniela GHETU
With the new school year underway, insurance associations and road safety organizations across Central Europe are once again joining forces to promote child road safety and accident prevention, bringing national initiatives together under the regional Child Safety program.

For the sixth time, insurance associations from the region are coordinating their prevention activities, with campaigns taking place around the start of the school year and European Mobility Week. The initiative brings together the insurance industry, road safety bodies, public authorities and educational institutions, with Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia among the participating countries.

Rather than implementing a single standardized campaign, the partners develop national programs adapted to local needs, while sharing the same objective and communicating under a common regional identity. Activities range from educational campaigns and games for children to school initiatives, e-learning tools, public events and practical road-safety demonstrations. Particular attention is given to safe routes to school, behavior in poor visibility and other high-risk traffic situations.

The initiative is coordinated within the CEE-Group, an informal alliance of insurance associations in Central and Eastern Europe, illustrating how insurers can extend their role beyond financial compensation and contribute directly to risk prevention.

National insurance associations are at the heart of the program: VVO in Austria, ABI in Bulgaria, MABISZ in Hungary, PIU in Poland, UNSAR in Romania, SIA in Slovenia and SLASPO in Slovakia work alongside road safety authorities and other local partners.

Cooperation has developed progressively over recent years, providing a regional platform through which the insurance industry can share the same prevention message while allowing each market to choose the tools most appropriate for reaching children, parents and other road users. With schools reopening and children once again becoming a highly visible part of daily traffic, the timing gives the campaign particular relevance.
