Such disparity between the quarters illustrates the potentially uneven loss profile of war-risk portfolio. Even with a relatively stable number of policies, a single wave of attacks can drastically alter reported claims and payments.
At the same time, insurers are expanding their products offering protection against war-related events. During the first half of the year, insurers issued—for the first time—policies covering war risks within liability and financial risk insurance. Life insurers are also increasingly incorporating war risks into savings insurance plans; the number such new policies exceeded 5,000 units.
In the first half of the year, Ukrainian insurers disclosed data on reserves for reported but unpaid losses for the first time. These reserves totaled approximately UAH 977 million (~EUR 19.71 million), with UAH 898 million attributed to property damage insurance. According to the National Association of Insurers of Ukraine (NAIU), this figure is just as important as actual payments when assessing the true scale of the damage. While UAH 176.5 million paid show completed part of claims settlement, UAH 977 million reserve reflects a significant volume of claims for which financial obligations remain on insurers' balance sheets.
The retail segment is developing rapidly. Most policies (95% of all property insurance contracts) are based on a comprehensive coverage approach. The conversion rate from inquiries to signed contracts stands at approximately 40%. This drives insurers to develop new products to meet demand, despite persistent obstacles such as high costs and geographical limitations. Corporate property insurance once again confirms its status as the most challenging area for underwriting; every industrial or commercial facility involves a high concentration of capital and unique operational characteristics.
The logistics insurance segment generated nearly UAH 130 million in premiums during the reporting period. Paid claims reached UAH 29.5 million, while another UAH 28.1 million represents reserves for claims awaiting a final decision, the source added.
