The participants discussed how the increasingly uncertain international environment is changing the economic and social situation at home and in Europe and what challenges this brings for the resilience of the insurance industry.
According to Sergej Simoniti, director of the insurance company on claims insurance Coface, in Slovenia the future has been built on the assumption of a stable and increasingly interconnected world, which has been shaken by a series of upheavals in the last decade, from the Covid-19 pandemic to the war in Ukraine. Nevertheless, he remains optimistic, because, according to him, the essence of the insurance industry is precisely risk management. His assessment was also supported by the director of the Insurance Supervision Agency, mag. Gorazd Čibej, who emphasized that insurance companies, reinsurance companies and pension companies achieve a high level of capital adequacy and exceed the European average, which allows them to maintain financial stability and meet their obligations even in difficult circumstances.
The Minister of Finance, in charge of current affairs, Klemen Boštjančič, warned that natural disasters in recent years have shown how fragile the sense of security that we often take for granted is. Until recently, it seemed unlikely that Slovenia would be hit by floods on the scale it experienced in 2023, and he said the same applies to earthquake risk.
At a roundtable on risk management, representatives of the largest Slovenian insurance companies emphasized that the nature of their activities is changing. "We are no longer just in the business of predicting the future, but increasingly in the business of surviving what we did not predict", said Tadej Čoroli, M.Sc. from Zavarovalnica Triglav. According to him, the resilience of insurance companies is based on capital buffers, multi-layered reinsurance programs and regular stress tests.
The second day of the 32nd Insurance Days was dedicated to the question of how artificial intelligence is changing the insurance industry and what role human judgement continues to play in this.
