Czech insurers paid EUR 548 million for damages to properties in 2022; damages occur every 2 minutes

In 2022, Czech insurance companies handled over 270,000 property insurance claims for almost CZK 13 billion (EUR 548 million). In average, a damage to the property of Czechs or companies occurred every two minutes. The most expensive were the fires. Windstorms became the jump of the year, the number of which increased by a third, data of the Czech Association of Insurance Companies (CAP) show.

According to CAP data, the most expensive property insurance events were fires, both in absolute terms and in terms of average damage. This rose to CZK 676,114 (EUR 28.480), and in total insurance companies paid out over CZK 3.5 billion (EUR 147.43 million) to clients due to fires. "The data are not surprising; fires are one of the most devastating property insurance events. Last year was very dramatic in terms of fires. The most significant event was undoubtedly the extensive holiday fire in the Czech Switzerland National Park," says Petr Jedlicka, an analyst at the Czech Insurance Association.

The second place according to average damage was explosions. "In 2022, explosions recorded by insurers as insured events were the fewest of all property losses, specifically 292. But these events had the second highest average loss, and that was almost CZK 500,000," explains Petr Jedlicka.

At the other end of the imaginary ladder of property insurance events was other damage to electronics with an average damage of CZK 9,567 and damage or destruction of glass for an average of CZK 10,201.

Compared to 2021, the number of damage events caused by storms increased last year by approximately one third, and in 2022 insurance companies dealt with almost 50,000 insurance events caused by storms. "The increase can be interpreted as a result of a higher area of storms in 2022 compared to 2021, which was dominated by a devastating tornado in southern Moravia with enormous damage, which nevertheless occurred in a relatively narrowly defined area," explained Petr Jedlicka. This is also indicated by the data of the Czech Insurance Association, according to which the average loss decreased to 31 thousand crowns from 124 thousand CZK in 2021, affected by high damages in the tornado. On the contrary, the average amount of damage increased the most for thefts, by 38% to 33.5 thousand crowns.

No one can avoid an insurance event, and we will experience an average of 3.5 such property events in our lifetime. "We are talking about the average number of property insurance claims reported, regardless of cause. The statistical probability that some harmful event will happen to us in our lives exceeds 97%," adds Petr Jedlicka.
