Moldova's insurance sector significantly improved its financial performance in the first quarter of 2026. Insurance companies' net profit amounted to MDL 68.7 million (~EUR 3.39 million), which is 83.6% more y-o-y, Sputnik Moldova writes, citing a report from the National Bank of Moldova (NBM).

According to the report, one of the key indicators was the combined operating ratio, which decreased to 98.6%. This means that for the first time in a long while, insurers were able to cover claims and operating expenses from their core business (the average ratio in 2025 was 103.5%).

As NBM noted, the financial stability of the sector remains high. Total insurance assets reached MDL 6.1 billion, technical reserves increased to MDL 3.5 billion, and insurers' equity approached MDL 1.5 billion. Experts note that market competition is gradually shifting from price to service quality, policy issuance speed, and development of digital services, the source added.
