Romania: employers boost private health insurance offerings amid rising demand

27 March 2025 — Daniela GHETU
Romanian employers are increasingly including private health insurance in employee benefit packages, with annual coverage ranging from EUR 300 to EUR 1,200 per employee. Demand has doubled since the pandemic, as companies seek to attract and retain talent in an increasingly competitive job market, according to The Brokers Romania.

SMEs and large corporations alike are opting for tax-deductible policies (up to EUR 400 per employee), while many extend coverage to family members or offer treatment options abroad. The highest individual claims have exceeded EUR 400,000, reflecting the growing reliance on private insurance for comprehensive healthcare access.

“Private health insurance is no longer a luxury—it’s an essential part of benefits packages. Companies recognize its impact on employee well-being and productivity,” said Adrian Stancu, founder of The Brokers Romania. Employees increasingly request coverage for preventive tests, hospitalizations, chronic conditions, telemedicine, mental health services, and second medical opinions.

The trend is evident nationwide, expanding beyond major cities like Bucharest and Cluj to Constanța, Timișoara, Olt, and Brașov. Industries leading the adoption include finance, IT, energy, automotive, and retail.

Romania’s private health insurance market reached a record RON 800 million in 2023, a 21.5% increase from the previous year, with over 700,000 insured individuals. The rise is driven by labor market shifts, heightened health awareness post-pandemic, and growing competition for skilled professionals.
