STATISTICS: ESTONIA 1Q2026: Slightly positive evolution despite the motor insurance premiums decrease

Estonian insurers posted aggregate business worth EUR 177.91 million in Q1 2026, 4.4% up y-o-y, according to quarterly figures, published by the Estonian National Statistics Board. Claims expenses grew at a similar pace, reaching EUR 112.33 million.

The total value of GWP for the life segment increased by 31.56% y-o-y to EUR 28.16 million, while the value of non-life GWP totaled EUR 149.75million, up by just 0.5% y-o-y. The main reason for this quasi stagnation of the non-life market is the negative trend recorded by the motor insurance lines, which saw a 6.13% fall in GWP.

The aggregate value of insurance claims paid by local and other EU branches expanded to EUR 112.33 million at the end of Q1 2026, +4.42% y-o-y. The motor insurance saw an overall decrease in paid claims similar to the one recorded on the premiums side, but it is worth noting that looking at the individual results on the two motor lines, claims paid for MTPL insurance went down at a much higher pace than those for Motor Hull (11.7% vs. 2.9%). Claims expenses for property insurance, on the other hand, increased by 13.77% y-o-y.

Among the five active life insurers, the market leader was SEB Life and Pension Baltic SE Eesti filiaal (36.12% market share), catching up and even easily overtaking the market share of the former life insurance market leader, Swedbank Life Insurance SE.

Estonia's market leader on the non-life insurance segment was Swedbank P&C Insurance (17.65%), followed by If P&C Insurance AS and AB Lietuvos draudimas Eesti filial, maintain the same Top 3 hierarchy y-o-y.
