STATISTICS:  GREECE FY2025: Modest growth almost equally driven by life, MTPL and fire insurance

According to data provided by the Association of Insurance Companies of Greece (AAEE), the total premium production in 2025 increased y-o-y by 5.6%, amounting to EUR 6 billion.

In more detail:
 

  • Non-life Insurance increased by 8.3%, reaching EUR 3.2 billion.
  • Life Insurance increased by 2.7%, reaching EUR 2.8 billion.
  • Motor insurance amounted to almost half of the non-life business, reaching EUR 1.23 billion, 8% up y-o-y
  • Property insurance lines totaled EUR 704.6 million, 8.2% more y-o-y.

Data on claims expenses are not yet available. However, some relevant information was published by AAEE about the NatCat losses in 2025. The Chairman of the Property, Transport & Reinsurance Committee, Errikos Moatsos, stated in this regard: "Shortly before the end of 2025, two intense weather events caused extensive damage to homes, businesses and vehicles. The compensation paid by insurance companies for these specific events is estimated to approach EUR 12 million."

In total, during the 2025 review, we recorded 3,196 damage declarations from 6 serious catastrophic events, with the insurance market's compensation for them estimated at EUR 27.9 million. These figures highlight the frequency and intensity of natural disasters, but also the crucial role of private insurance in supporting citizens and businesses.”

According to the research by the Association of Insurance Companies of Greece (AAEE) for the first estimate of the compensations of the Greek insurance market for property and car insurance losses from the bad weather Adel and Byron, a total of 2,491 losses were recorded with the amount of compensation for them estimated at a total of EUR 11.8 million.

Of these, 1,282 losses concerned property insurance (estimated damages of EUR 9.9 million) and 1,209 losses concerned motor insurance (estimated EUR 1.9 million). 27 insurance companies participated in the EAEE survey, which is estimated to account for 99% of property insurance production.

It is recalled that the bad weather Adel occurred at the end of November 2025 and mainly affected Western Greece and Attica, while the bad weather Byron occurred at the beginning of December, mainly affecting Eastern Greece, Attica and several regions of the country.

On the Greek insurance market there are operating 26 insurance companies domiciled in Greece, 1 mutual insurance cooperative, 13 branches of foreign insurance enterprises and 6 European insurance companies operating in Greece based on the Freedom to Provide Services status.
