ExploRe & ReConnext 2026 – Key takeaways from Day One

The first day of the Explore & ReConnext Global Insurance Summit 2026, held in Antalya, brought into focus, in a series of parallel session, a wide range of topics - from reinsurance, catastrophe risk and seismic modelling, to health, digitalisation and international mobility.

Beyond this diversity, a common message ran through almost all sessions:
the insurance industry is becoming increasingly interconnected, more complex, and more dependent on data, collaboration and trust.

A market under pressure, yet still disciplined

Discussions on the reinsurance market highlighted a phase of slower growth, shaped by geopolitical tensions, economic pressures and shifting risk dynamics.

Despite signs of rate softening and discussions around excess capacity, the conclusion was clear: underwriting discipline and selective capital allocation remain defining features of market quality.

From physical damage to systemic risk

One of the most relevant themes of the day was the transformation of the business interruption concept.

In today’s economy, losses are no longer driven solely by direct physical damage, but increasingly by supply chain disruptions, logistical bottlenecks, shortages of raw materials and geopolitical events.

This shift challenges traditional insurance models and calls for a deeper understanding of non-damage business interruption risks.

Seismic risk: from science to financial solutions

Several sessions focused on earthquake risk in Türkiye, combining scientific insights with financial protection mechanisms.

Key points included:

  • the Marmara region remains a major risk area due to the active North Anatolian Fault
  • modern modelling increasingly relies on indicators such as PGV, seen as more relevant for real damage estimation
  • parametric solutions are gaining traction, enabling fast, predefined payouts based on clear triggers

At the same time, catastrophe modelling is evolving toward greater transparency, increased customisation, closer integration into underwriting processes and wider use of AI tools.

Health becomes global, digital and patient-centred

Health-focused sessions highlighted a major shift: patients increasingly behave like global consumers.

Türkiye is emerging as a key hub for health travel, combining medical expertise, competitive pricing, modern infrastructure and strategic geographic positioning.

However, this development also brings greater complexity. Discussions showed that:

  • healthcare systems are becoming harder to navigate
  • digital tools (telemedicine, AI, wearables) are reshaping care delivery
  • insurance must provide not only financial protection, but also coordination, guidance and trust

A strong message emerged: in medical travel, the real risk is not only the intervention itself, but what happens after the patient returns home.

Insurance: from financial product to trust system

Across multiple sessions, a shared idea emerged: insurance is no longer just a financial product - it is increasingly becoming a system of trust and coordination.

This is particularly visible in international health, data-driven healthcare systems and automated decision-making processes.

As systems become more digital, key questions arise around data ownership, fairness and trust protection

After the catastrophe: where the market is truly tested

The NatCat claims session highlighted a fundamental reality: the real test of the market begins after the event occurs.

The key message was simple and powerful: preparation must happen before the catastrophe, not after.

Effective response depends on:

  • collaboration between insurers and loss adjusters
  • training and pre-designed scenarios
  • clear processes and functional partnerships
  • technology to accelerate claims handling and customer experience

Conclusion of the day

If one idea were to summarise Day One, it would be this:

The future of insurance will not be defined only by how risks are assessed and priced, but by the market’s ability to understand complexity, respond quickly and maintain trust.

Organized in cooperation by IUC events, Confera event Partners and XPRIMM, Explore & ReConnext Global Insurance Summit 2026 gathered in Antalya 275+ participants from 36 countries, representing 107 companies, and hosted over 1,000 meetings and several stage sessions covering the most important topics of the re/insurance business. The third edition will take place on 21–24 March 2027, again in Antalya.
