Romania, UNSAR: Compensation for damaged property surges by over 60%

Insurance companies in Romania paid out RON 300 million (EUR 59 million) in 1H 2025 for claims related to fires and natural disasters affecting businesses and households - an increase of roughly 63% compared with the same period in 2024, the insurers’ association said in a press release.


Bucharest hosts key EU Workshop on ELD implementation and financial security insurance instruments

The Environmental Liability Directive (ELD) was the central topic of a workshop jointly organized by UNSAR – The Romanian Insurers’ Association – and HAIC, the Hellenic Association of Insurance Companies. The event took place in Bucharest as part of the European LIFE PROFILE project, which aims to strengthen the financial protection mechanisms supporting environmental remediation.

STATISTICS: ROMANIA 1H2025: double-digit growth for the life insurance segment

Romanian insurance market ended 1H2025 with gross written premium worth EUR 2.43 billion, by 6.3% more y-o-y. Life insurance totaled GWP of EUR 508.8 million, 18.3% up y-o-y, its share in the market portfolio increasing by 2 percentage points, to 20.94%. The non-life segment increased by 3.5%, to EUR 1.92 billion. The results include both domestic insurers and FOE/FOS players’ business results.

Romania’s insurance market recorded a positive evolution in 1H 2025. Total volume of gross written premiums reached RON 12.3 billion, (approx. EUR 2.47 billion), up 8% y-o-y, reflecting the strong dynamics of life insurance as well as the resilience of the motor segment, according to the latest report published by the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF).
